Antwuan Hicks leadership key to Tabb last

After Hunter Strack kicked a 34 yard field goal with 22 seconds remaining in the game to give York a 10 9 lead, Tabb’s Antwuan Hicks had more to add to what already was a brilliant performance.

Tigers coach Matt Lawson said Hicks, a 5 foot 8, 162 pound junior, got loud with his teammates in the kickoff return team huddle.

“He said, ‘We’re going to get this thing, get a big run back make this happen,’” Lawson said. “He stepped up and wouldn’t let them get down or give up.

“His leadership was big.”

As Hicks predicted, the Tigers got the big run back, with Brent Hinson returning the ball from the 20 to midfield, where Tabb got an extra 15 yards to the 35 for a York face mask penalty. Hicks then made a leaping catch for a 24 yard gain, somehow holding onto the ball and staying inbounds as he was hit.

That set up Grant Kelchner’s 35 yard field goal as time expired to give the Tigers (6 2) a 12 10 victory, ending a five game losing streak in a series that began 40 years ago. In a defensive battle, Hicks distinguished himself with five mostly acrobatic catches under heavy coverage, good for 96 yards.

His 24 yard reception set up his 11 yard touchdown catch from Nick Hunter (7 of 12 passing, 151 yards). Hicks, who has 28 catches for 535 yards and six touchdowns, could’ve went over 100 yards receiving for the third time this season as he drew a pass interference call on York (3 5) for what almost surely would’ve been a long reception.

Hinson, Hunter and Kelchner all provided heroics, while the Tigers got terrific play up front on defense from Josh Hopingardner, Casey Evans and Robert Wiscarson. Linebackers John Atwood and Austin Hehir were also stellar.

For Lawson, the last second victory was his first in more than 20 years as a coach 16 as a head coach.

“That obviously doesn’t happen on a regular basis,” Lawson said. “It was very exciting.”ansigtsløft pris

Rams defense rolls

Lafayette coach Andy Linn said his defense held New Kent to minus 1 yard in the 62 0 win on Friday. With that kind of defensive effort, the Rams (8 0) could’ve won by double digits with only the three safeties they forced and cornerback Jahlil Green’s 21 yard interception return for a touchdown.

Yes, you read that right: the Rams forced three safeties, which could be a single game Bay Rivers District record. One came on a sack by Blake Guminsky and two others on intentional grounding calls against New Kent (2 6) in the end zone as Guminsky, Matt Hummel and Darren Patton lived in the Trojans backfield.

Boyce save Islanders

Poquoson’s running attack distinguished itself with 317 yards in a 35 33 win at Smithfield, with Grayson Boyce running for 210 yards and three touchdowns. It was a tackle by Boyce, however, that proved to be the difference in the game.

Boyce tackled Smithfield quarterback Devin Williams inches short of a game tying 2 point conversion with 5:46 left in the game. Smithfield folks argued that Williams was over the goal line and Poquoson coach Elliott Duty acknowledged that the call could’ve went either way.

Smithfield (4 4) forced a punt and had one last chance to salvage a victory, driving to midfield with about four minutes to play. Matt Blaser recovered a Smithfield fumble and the Islanders (5 3) ran out the clock from there with three first downs.

Jamestown runs to victory

Jamestown coach Lee Williams’ message to his players was that something had to give Friday because they were battling for a 4A South Region playoff berth and Warhill was doing the same in the 3A East. Jamestown (3 5) boosted its hopes with a 34 20 win that virtually ensures Warhill (1 7) will not make a third consecutive playoff appearance.

A three pronged running attack out of a double wing set was key for the Eagles, which netted 342 yards on the ground. Mark Lipscomb ran for 114 yards and Daivon Turner 102 by going mostly outside, with Stas Szczepanski netting much of his 94 yards on the inside.

The Eagles now sit just outside the 16 team cutoff to make the 4A South playoffs, and will need at least to beat either Tabb on Saturday or Poquoson in the regular season finale to get in. York had 14 first downs to Tabb’s 9. Tabb rushed for 121 yards and passed for 151, while York ran for 210 and passed for 27.
